Skincare and Makeup Tips and Advice for Lady Riders
Why should you worry about skincare and makeup? It's more important than you think. But to be honest, some of it is just purely for vanity's sake. Either way, the information below contains helpful hints, tips and tricks to staying beautiful on the road!
Protecting Your Skin
Skincare is often overlooked by women riders but if you have ever had windburn or sunburn, your skin probably has sustained some type of damage. As you are probably aware, overexposure to the elements can cause pre-mature aging, discoloration, wrinkles and could lead to serious harm such as skin cancer.
The only way to absolutely protect your skin is to completely cover up. Since that isn't possible, here are some tips that will help:
- Use sunblock or sunscreen. Although this seems obvious, most skip this step when preparing for a ride. Make it part of your pre-ride routine. Take a few minutes before you leave home to apply a product that contains an appropriate SPF level for your skin type. Nothing lower than an SPF of 15. If you have a fair complexion, we recommend not going lower than 30 SPF.
- Don't forget your face! If you feel that sunscreens are too greasy or heavy, or if you wear foundation or power and don't want it to get ruined, use a moisturizer with a sunscreen built in
. Apply the moisturizer before your makeup and not only will your foundation and blush go on smoother, but you can feel secure knowing that you are also keeping sun-damage at bay. Many popular cosmetic companies have added this feature to their products so finding one won't be difficult. Some have even started to add it directly to liquid foundation as well.
- What about your ears and neck? Did you forget them? Sunburn on the ears hurts like the devil! And no one likes to see your neck darker than your face! Use your moisturizer with sunscreen on those areas too.
- Makeup alone offers some protection. But not enough. While the benefits of makeup will have some affect on the amount of rays that your skin will soak up, it alone can not keep out the dangerous UVA and UVB rays. Use a sunscreen.
Makeup Tips and Tricks
Fluff or fun, whatever you want to call it, we like makeup! And if you do too, here are some handy tips for you!
- Use waterproof mascara. Unless you like looking like a raccoon, we recommend it. Watering eyes from the wind, sweat and that dang rain are two of the quickest ways to ruin a good look. If you can, waterproof!
- Don't get stuck on your lip gloss. Never use a lipstick or lip product that is sticky to the touch after a minute or so. You'll show up to your destination with hair, bugs and dirt stuck to your lips. Yuck!
- Don't cake it on. If you wear foundation, cut back on how much you apply. If you don't, you'll regret it if it rains. You'll also regret it if your glasses fail to keep out the wind making your eyes water. You'll end up with those unsightly "tear trails" leaving you with a stripe from your eyes to your hairline. And if you have to wash a bug off of your face, it'll be harder to repair the damage. Try one of the new mineral based powder foundations instead. You'll have and easier time with touch-ups.
- Carry a touch-up kit. You'll only need a few things. Include a compact (that has both a mirror and powder), eyeliner, and lip gloss or lipstick. These are great for quick fixes.
- Your lips are skin too! They need protection from wind and sun just like the rest of your face. Use a product that contains an SPF rating
to keep your lips kissable and crack-free.
- Avoid liquid eyeliner. This is an easy one. For the same reasons above that you want to wear water-proof mascara, don't even bother with liquid eyeliner. Stick with a pencil.
